If you read our last blog post Why You Should Take At Least One Solo Trip, you may have learned that traveling solo can create a whole new perspective on the world, along with gaining a confidence boost and a feeling of empowerment. While we believe traveling solo is good for the soul, it's important to be prepared and keep yourself safe while doing so. We've compiled a list of 6 tips for traveling alone to keep in mind while planning your next solo trip.

1. Avoid Single Supplement

Single supplement is a premium that some places, like cruise ships or all inclusive hotels, will charge solo travels to make up for the money they would miss out on if you were accompanied by someone. When researching a place to stay, avoid places that will charge you this premium. In addition to that, choose a place that has multiple positive reviews so there are no surprises when you get there.

2. Leave your itinerary with friends and/or family

Doing this will help keep your friends and family informed of where you'll be and an idea of what you'll be doing. That way if something unexpected were to happen, they can easily figure out where to find you based on your itinerary. It also creates some peace of mind knowing that a loved one knows where you are while traveling alone. Sending occasional quick updates to family or friends via email, text or social media is also a great idea to keep them in the loop.

3. Drink responsibly (but also have some fun)

When in a foreign country or even a foreign state that you are unfamiliar with, it's important to drink responsibly, especially when you're out alone, to keep your wits about you. You'll want to be alert and able to recognize your surroundings in case you get lost.

4. Make a list of your emergency contact(s)

Keep this list handy and on you at all times. In the unlikely event that something does happen to you, officials will know who you are and who to contact.

5. Make friends with your concierge (or host wherever you're staying)

Making friends with the person at the front desk or your host is important, especially if you're going out at night. Letting them know where you're going and when you plan to be back will help you have an ally in a foreign place who has an idea of your whereabouts. Feel free to ask them where the safer areas are to go alone and also ask if a particular place you plan on visiting is a safe place. If it's not, they may be able to offer alternative spots or tips to increase your safety if you still want to visit.

6. Lastly, trust your gut

If something doesn't feel right, trust your gut. Humans have a pretty good sense of when something isn't right and it's important to trust your instincts when on your own in a foreign place. This can help you avoid trouble.

Like we said, traveling solo can be a great experience. It can teach you a lot about yourself and the world, all while giving you a new perspective on life. Bottom line is that as long as you are prepared, use good judgement, trust your instincts and stay aware of your surroundings, you can have a blast traveling solo and create memories of your foreign adventures that will last a lifetime!
